Mahogany vs Maple.

It is hard to draw any conclusions because these are 2 different banjos but you may hear a bit of boldness in the Maple and a slightly different tonal depth in the mahogany.

    That is the best description of how a compensated bridge works that I have ever heard. All three of my banjos have a Nechville compensated bridge.

    I absolutely love this video -- and I return to it periodically, just to bask in it (so to speak). Not the least because Jens' playing is, as ever, enchanting -- but also because of the fair-minded showing it gives of both Deering and Nechville banjos. Both are excellent instruments; this video shows well the strengths of each. Ultimately, and at this level of luthiery, it comes down to the feel of the instrument's neck; my preference is in the direction of Nechville on that count. But both banjos -- the Tenbrooks series and the entire Nechville line -- are out of this world.

    Just bought an rk 35. The action is 1/4" at the bottom fret. How do I get it down to 1/8" . I also got major vibration noise mostly on the middle G string? I noticed the center string on the bridge has a v shape cut on the side. facing the neck. >| . I switched out bridges and the other bridge helped but don't sound near as good as the ss. I don't think that's a truss rod adjustment.

    2.7-2.9 give depth and smoothness. Sounds like a modern banjo for styles being played today. Many People did'nt like the banjo before because of the shrill raspy sound produced by the light bridges. Some compared the sound to fingernails being scraped across a chalkboard. But with the heavy bridge they might change their mind.

    You mentioned the original tension was 93 or 94 per the Drum Dial. Did you happen to measure the tension with the Drum Dial after you took some of the tension out? Just curious. Thanks!

      You are correct. Check the video at about 8:50 and you will see that a clockwise turn as looking down the wrench will lower the string taking more of the bow out of the neck

    I always thought the Irish banjo was a shorter neck, 17 frets shorter distance between frets. This makes it easier to play at speed for jigs and reels. I do not know many Irish players who used a longer neck. When they do they usually use a capo?

    • @philipmichael4106
      @philipmichael4106 4 месяца назад

      It is, my Barnes & Mullins Irish tenor banjo is 17 frets. Tuned GDAE. Edna Scahill uses longer necks, but then he is simply brilliant with all styles.

    After years of going to Tom's booth at IBMA and drooling over the Nechville banjos, I finally bit the bullet this year and purchased the Nechville Turtle Hill Custom Phantom. What a stunning banjo in both looks and tone! It's like the blacked-out sportscar of banjos :) Love the black trim and hardware. The quilted maple back is beautiful, as well as the custom inlay design. Can it shoot flames? LOL j/k love it!
